Many authors suggest that a lack of marginally favorable breeding habitat limits the dispersal possibilities of maturing birds and is therefore important in favoring retention of offspring in the natal territory. However why birds in such environments do not become "floaters" within high quality territories has not yet been adequately examined. Second, the hypothesis does not address the almost universal observation that nondispersers actively assist in the rearing of nestlings, rather than leading relatively independent lives within their natal home range as is the case in many mammals .
